Need to update map database in a Mazda navigation system?

My dad has a 2005 Mazda RX-8 with a navigation system installed (put in by Mazda, not a portable one--Garmin, Magellan, etc.). He's always complaining that his maps are outdated (if street names have changed, new restaurants open, etc.) because the map CD in the car is from 2005. So I'd like to buy him a 2008 version if possible, I just have no idea what to buy, where to get it, or how it should be installed in his car. Are there different brands of these type of CDs/map databases that will work with any nav system, or will I have to buy it from Mazda? Any website you can refer me to would be of great help, I just have no idea where to start. Thanks!

  1. Google, My friend.
  2. GPS receivers are picky about the maps you can load on them. Most times, they will only read maps released by the company that manufactured the GPS receiver. In your case, that means going to the Mazda dealership to buy a new CD or DVD or whatever your dad's car uses. You can try eBay to see if somebody is selling an updated CD, but you'll want to be 100% sure you are getting a disc that will work with the car. Make sure there is a return policy if you go that route. It would stink to end up with a disc that won't work with your system. Otherwise, spend more money at Mazda and they should be able to find the right disc for you.
