TomTom or Magellan GPS?

Okay ppl, I just recently bought my first car, now I am thinking of buying a GPS system and need a second opinion, so my question is....which GPS is the better buy, TomTom or Magellan? If possible, give me the advantages and disadvantages of both systems?

  1. MAGELLAN!!!!! thats a nice sounden name...
  2. I dont know anything about TomTom, but I can tell you about the Magellan Maestro 40xx series. Let me set it up with the details... Im about to become a Fedex driver. I tagged along with the current driver to see how his delivery route is. He covers a whopping 10 cities, and at 3-4 of them are small, country towns! Several locations didnt have any street signs up. We started at 8:30am and ended at 8:30pm logging over 250 miles. Before we left that morning, this dude placed his 8-page computer printout driving directions on the floor, and revved up his Magellan. Sometimes, we went up to 7 miles deep through the woods (dirt, gravel roads, and twists and turns) looking for peoples houses, and the Magellan found them without hiccup. You type your destination in, and based on your criteria selection (fastest time, shortest distance, etc...), the Magellan will highlight your path. It will tell you how many miles you have left before making a turn, and so on. If you pass up your turn, the Magellan will recalculate another route for you on the fly(or you can just turn around...). Its also voice playback, so the computer will say stuff like "Approaching right turn," or "You have arrived," or "Louis Street 0.3 miles ahead." During the day, the interface has a pretty colorful display. Once it turns night time, the interface changes colors for better viewing, otherwise the day screen would be EXTREMELY bright at night. After all said and done, the Magellan messed up one time. It works for any location on the 911 system. Sometimes when you're notified "You have arrived" at your destination, You are smack dab on location. Other times, you may have drive another 0.1-0.5 miles to find the right location. Were going to split that route in half, so both of us can get off early. He said he will eventually buy me one if I decided to take half the route. I told him I would have one by Monday. I was impressed. He did mention he looked at the TomTom, but I got the impression that his opinion was neutral(nothing postive or negative to say about it).
